Ok I have the retail CD version for WIN 98/Me/2000/XP. I have a dell laptop widescreen with win XP. Using Direct X 9.0c I followed the install instructions exactly. Installed the game Installed patch 1 Installed patch 2 Installed circle of eight modpack 5.9.3 NC After each install I waited to get the propper pop up saying install completed ok. Now it should just work right? I start the front end click run I have the modpack 5.9.3 NC active and it did this step propperly. click play atari splash screen troika splash screen then wizards of the coast splash screen then it dumps me back to the desk top! So what gives? Need help please. Update tried making Plain temple of elemental evil active. That worked then tried to run the game still dumped me to the desktop. My native screen resolution is 1366 X 768 I tried 1024 X 768 game still dumped me back to desk top. Turned off Avira anti virus still dumps me back to desk top. Aspect ratio options set to full screen tried disable intro movie still dumps to desk top. Ok I deleted all of it and started over. Loaded TOEE and ran it. It works. Installed patch 1 It works. Installed patch 2 error. runtime error! Microsoft visual C++ library. abnormal program termination hmm so what do I do now? Patch 2 appears to be my problem. I tried downloading a different patch 2 from cnet downloads.com That patch 2 does the same thing runtime error. My cursor turns into a spinning CD icon and the CD drive will not eject the CD. I have to reboot in order to eject the CD after this runtime error happens. Can I skip patch 2 and run the circle of eight patch after patch 1?
Unfortunately no. Co8 requires Atari patch 2. It does seem like Atari patch 2 is your issue though. Have you looked at the How I Got ToEE and the Co8 Mod Up and Running thread?
I can not find any solution for my problem. Patch 2 creates an unworkable .exe file for me. I have since tried to install ToEE on my other computers and it does work on them. It just refuses to work on my new dell laptop. It must be an issue with intell mobile 4 series graphic express chipset that is my onboard video on that new laptop. The problem is almost every one of these laptops uses vista. So there is no driver suport for win xp which is what I use.
After 2 weeks of trying everything and searching every web site for clues to my problem I finally got it working on my system see first post for details in this thread. Anyway I had to install the game then add patch 1 then patch 2 then CO8 patch 5.9.3. Then I went to the ToEE front end icon and right click on it. Then click on the compatibility tab. Then click on the box Disable Visual themes That was all it took and now it runs fine on my new notebook. This fix is not listed anywhere on CO8 sticky threads on how to get ToEE working. Maybe it should be added.
