FMyI, are the flags and variables located in a known file -- I looked, but could not find. Or are all flags and variables zeroed out at the start of a game and only accessed through the array objects? If so, I would assume that fixed values of the flags and variables exist o't within the saved game files.

Is there any preferred programming/scripting language? For compiled code I'm pretty much C++ (I like Assembler, but I'd be hard pressed to justify learning Intel Assembly for modding
). I usually use BASH of KSHELL for scripting, but I've been wanting to try PERL, and it seems appropriately flexible for the tools I want to write. Also, it's probably a bit easier to read than C++. The difference is C++ will generate standalone executables while PERL has to be installed (but is free). Any preference, or should I just use whatever I think fits?--thearioch |

Based on the Python page, I should be able to get some alpha-quality in just a few days.... Mind you, the tools I'm writing are to parse dlg/py files and list variables/flags/quests used so I can make some sense of things when I write a mod. With an MD5 signature, however, it should be a good sanity check to run before a release and make sure people don't use the same resources for independent mods. Unless you guys already have better resource management tools, which wouldn't surprise me. --thearioch |

If you mean "tools that combine mods into one or get different mods running together", no, we really have none, other than the Front End to get different mods running independantly. Unlike some other games (Dungeon Siege comes to mind from what the U5:L team say) you can't really have different mods running at once with ToEE: the game only recognises one protos.tab at a time, conflicting map data will cause CTDs etc. Beyond Compare is the only tool we really use for such things, although Agetian's 'proto transfer tool' (ToEEPT) also makes things much easier.

Re. the flag/var list, the list above was created by going through the .py and .dlg files with a fine tooth comb. Someone already made an automated list in the past, using an existing program that I think was similar to what you're going to write (I think rufnredde is the guy), but it still lacked the actual meaning, which I think can only be done by hand. Also, this automated approach doesn't catch every single flag/var substitution, e.g. the "received wilderness encounter" flags and "heard rumor x" flags which depend on formulas (ones that are sometimes not very trivial).
By the way, if you want to make a truly useful tool, what I'd love to see is a visual dialogue tree editor that'd abstract out all the various variables and conditions to something more transparent and natural for the user. Currently, scripting unique, character/state dependent replies, not to mention meaningful branching with consequences, is a laborious pain in the ass, which in my opinion limits the amount of roleplaying and coherence we can achieve. Often when we do try to accomodate varying alignments, races, classes etc. it winds up being purely cosmetic or meaningless, with the NPC not remembering the exchange anyway. If we had a tool to efficiently and quickly create complex state machines in ToEE dialogue and scripts, I believe we could take ToEE to a whole other level of sophistication and intelligence. I'd really be grateful if you could write something like that, and would love to discuss the details of this venture further. |

I certainly agree with that. The current system (or sophistication of the system) primarily lends itself to the pedestrian dialogues that already dominate ToEE.
