The Nulb Crash Thread

Forgive me if there has been a previous thread addressing this, but has anyone has issues with the world map to Nulb crashing the game? I'm playing 5.0.3, and have the games correctly installed.

Re: Nulb crashes

this is a major bummer. I started a new game with the 5.0.3 after making it to the 2nd level of the ToEE to see Verbobonc, etc, and now this Nulb crash has permenantly thwarted any additional progress. Again, to my knowledge, all the installs were done correctly, and I've reinstalled repeatedly.

Re: Nulb crashes

If you're using the same saved game after each reinstallation, that might indicate that the save is corrupt. It happens, unfortunately. I can't recall hearing anything significant about bugs in the Nulb map, but I have gotten repeated CTDs going to Hommlet from the world map before. Had to shitcan the save.

Been thinking about this . . . Would all my saves be corrupted? In theory, can I go back to my earlier progress and be OK?

Re: Nulb crashes

I had a similar problem awhile ago with a game, I noticed in that game I wasnt able to use the signposts in hommlet though either. so I reinstalled the signpost mod and then 5.0.3 after that and everything was fine with nulb.

Where do I reinstall the mod?

Can someone please link me to a d/l of the signpost mod so I can give this method a shot?

thanks!

Sorry to leave you hanging, Firesprung. To the best of my knowledge, there should be no reason why all your saves would be corrupted with this issue. There is one scenario that we know of where that happens, but it involves missing secret doors and ladders. The only way you'll know for sure is to check them.

If you want to try the signpost mod theory, just reinstall 5.0.3 overtop your current installation. Then be sure to clear the map cache and delete .pyc files.

Early indications point to a solution! Thanks. I made it to the 5.0.3 version of Nulb at long last!

Re: nulb crashes

Try Co8 5.0.2, someone will need to look at the 5.0.3 version. Remember, the 5.0.3 version is a Beta. You can report the issue in the reporting issues thread and provide details like what you installed in what order.

@CtBlue: Is there a difference in the signpost mod between 5.0.2 and 5.0.3?

Re: Nulb crashes

I had exactly the same issue: everything works absolutely fine until I try to go to Nulb, then CTD with current save and old saves. I just wanted to confirm that the re-installation of 5.03 along with the deletion of the cache and .pyc files fixed the problem. Thanks!!

Re: crash when i go to nulb

Umm, did you start a new game after you installed Co8-5.0.4? If not, how were you patched before that?

Re: crash when i go to nulb

Did you try clearing the map cache? There is an option that does this for you in ToEEFE.

If that fails, you could try clearing the .PYC files from the data/scr folder.

I certainly don't have problems in Nulb, and my install is virtually the same as the one you've listed.

Re: crash when i go to nulb

You could try a complete re-install, perhaps that will help, it's certainly not something that I can reproduce on my end.

Uninstall ToEE, delete any leftovers in the installation folder and reinstall from scratch.

ToEE
Patch 1
Patch 2
Co8-5.0.0
5.0.4 CMF

And start a new game, I hope this will solve your problems.

Re: crash when i go to nulb

I actually just experienced this as well.

I had my cache-clearing settings set to "on." My version of the mod is 5.0.4, and I installed the mod 5.0.0 and the 5.0.4 update before I started a new game. Everything else has been spectacular up until this point.

I have not yet tried clearing the .PYC files as you suggested to aljares, but I want to make sure that doing so won't affect my game in any other way before I proceed with trying that...

Basically, I just wanted to get it out there that there is more than one person with this problem... I'm hoping that I won;t have to start a new game (or uninstall/re-install), but if that is truly the only option...

If it helps, I'm running a Sempron 2600+ (1.83 GHz) with XP and 1.0 GB of RAM. I have a GeForce FX 5500, and just a generic (CompUSA) 32-bit 5.1 soundcard... I am running the latest version of Directx for XP.

Any help would be appreciated, as I am so far LOVING this mod, and want to play it until my eyes bleed!

Thanks!

Re: crash when i go to nulb

Well, it seems like a complete uninstall and reinstall worked. I can now access Nulb (though I started a new game, as I deleted ALL previous TOEE files and Co8 Mod files and started completely anew.

I have experienced a couple of minor hangs that I hadn't previously (like at the Moathouse cave exit encounter, and the Caravan Ambushed by Gnolls encounter), but otherwise, everything is working swimmingly.

Hmm.

As has been common knowledge amongst the adepts of this game for some time, occasionally sacrificing a chicken or a goat works

In all honesty, sometimes a complete reinstall cures the problem. No idea why (possible user-errors in applying patches meaning things get confused?) but it can be a PITA playing the reinstall game for a problem which only you seem to be experiencing.

ah, map files and pyc files

ShiningTed now has a reason for knowing why to delete pyc files is needed to fix something. *grin*

Re: crash when i go to nulb

Grrrrrrrrr

Crashing on map changes may well mean the map cache needs clearing: it will have nothing to do with the .pyc files (or .py files). Problems compiling the .py files mean they break - the game doesn't.

As you well know.

Yah, we all know clearing the map cache works wonders...I had no idea you'd enjoy that comment so much about the pyc files, Ted. :p

Re: crash when i go to nulb

For future reference, how do I manually clear the map cache? I searched for a folder that looked like it contained cached files, but didn;t find anything I'd be confident in deleting without the proper knowledge of what it would affect...

Thanks.

(And a little "haha" for the fact that PITA and PETA share almost identical nomenclature )

Re: crash when i go to nulb

Open your "Temple of Elemental Evil\modules\Co8-5.0.0\maps" folder and delete the files that are NOT in the folders - these are the map cache files.

The .PYC files can be found in your "Temple of Elemental Evil\data\scr" folder, and it's quite safe to delete the .PYC files, but do NOT delete the .py files.

The game will automatically create new .pyc files next time the .py file is used in the game, this is normal for ToEE. The game may lag a little bit while creating the new .pyc files as the script has to be run from the .py (source file) instead of the compiled (.pyc file).

So, .pyc files crash and break the game then. I knew it! Delete them all!!
