Special Installation Instructions For Co8 v7.9

These instructions apply to both v7.9 standard and 7.9 NC.
  1. The operation of the ToEE Front-End utility, TFE-X, has changed with version 7.9 of the modpack. TFE-X no longer requires .NET Framework to operate. Instead, it requires the Java Runtime Environment. That's a scary-sounding way of saying that it requires something you very, very likely already have. However, to make sure, go to Start > Control Panel > Add or remove programs and look for Java listed there. If it's there, great, you're all set. If it's not, go to this link and download it: http://java.com/getjava

Java will not have any adverse effect on your system. It's extremely common and is used everywhere. Adding it will only help you. Java 1.6.0 (aka Java 6) is the minimum required version. You very likely have that or a higher version already.

  2. The old TFE-X is no longer needed, and the new TFE-X is a drop-in replacement. It will be installed automatically by the modpack installer with no extra maneuvers required by you. But the old TFE-X files will not automatically be deleted. You may want to manually delete the following files from your ToEE root directory, though it's not necessary and these files won't affect the operation of the new TFE-X:

    • ICSharpCode.SharpZipLib.dll
    • Interop.IWshRuntimeLibrary.dll
    • TFE-X.jpg
    • TFE-X-linux
    • TFE-X-repair.exe
    • TFE-X-repair.txt

  3. One final note: though the installation utility says that TFE-X will start automatically after the modpack is installed, it actually won't if you are running ToEE and Co8 on a non-Windows system, such as Linux or Mac OS X. If that's the case, you will have to manually launch TFE-X the first time by navigating to your ToEE root directory and double-clicking TFE-X.sh.

Please see this thread for further and more detailed information about the new ToEE Front-End X.

Re: Special Installation Instructions For Co8 v7.9

Will these installation instructions change if upgrading from <7.9 to a version newer than 7.9? I plan on finishing up other games while I wait for the final version of the modpack to play, which is why I ask.

Oh and you've done an absolutely amazing job. The new HB screens are unbelievable, and I'm loving the new interface, especially being able to read the text at a glance without having to strain my eyes now! One question on the UI, this may be early but will there be cursor changes up the road? Just wondering if the cursor mod becomes good enough for Co8 in the modding section.

@ WinstonShnozwick: All future versions of the Circle of Eight mod will use the new front-end. As such, these installation instructions will apply to all the future builds of the mod pack (with possible minor changes). As far as those possible minor changes go, we might eventually escalate the minimal Java version requirement from v1.6.0 (Java 6) to v1.7.0 (Java 7) if the upcoming UI enhancements dictate so. Once again, maybe we won't, it's too early to tell. Other than that, the procedure is going to be the same and the basic requirements and prerequisites will be the same as well.

I'd say that's very likely, as well as some possible other interesting contributions from Mr. scramjetbooster.

Should we uninstall the old TFE-X or just leave it?
Also, I'm assuming old saves are non-compatible again?

That's correct, old saves are never compatible between modpacks.

You don't have to remove or unintstall anything having to do with the old TFE-X, but if you are neat freak you may want to get rid of the old unused files as described above.

>Java

If anyone is concerned about the security implications of installing Java on their computers, these can be mitigated somewhat by -

1 - Disabling the Java plug in for each of your Web Browsers.
Note that Java and Java Script are NOT related to one another.

2 - And most importantly, do not surf the Internet / read e-mail using
an account that has "Admin" or "Root" level permissions.

See these links for guidance on creating new user accounts in M$ OS:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...ndows-vista-7/

Most "permission" related problems can be gotten around by granting
your "non-admin" account "Full Control" or to the game's directory.

Also download the "off line" copy of Java - Oracle has made it a PITA to get copies of the older versions so keeping your own archival backup copy could save ya a hassel or two in the future.

Cheers!

Re: Special Installation Instructions For Co8 v7.9

I'd like to add to the post above that it is also important to keep your Java installations up to date. Using an outdated version of Java (especially a severely outdated version of a Java runtime that is no longer updated or maintained in any way) might be a bad idea. While ToEE Front-End X can theoretically run on Java installations that are quite dated by now, it is in your best interest to ensure that you update your Java runtime frequently to the latest official update.
