Thinking of getting this game.
Are there essential patches or mods to apply?

Official Patch 1.2 (which may be bundled into newer versions of the Unofficial Patch, can't remember) and the latest Unofficial Patch ver. 7.3. The Unofficial Patch now gives the option to install bugfix-only or modified game, plus optional stuff like a widescreen mod.

Last time I played was with a mod called VTMB 2010 which combines the Unofficial Patch and 3 other mods into one. Most of the mods have newer versions now, though.

Best bet may be to play bugfix-only and then try either the Unofficial Patch and/or some of the other mods. With all the different clans and ways to build your character, if you enjoy the game you can definitely get alot of mileage out of it.
